How to Calculate Hourly Rate from Salary
Converting between salary and hourly rate is straightforward using this formula:
Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Week × Weeks per Year)
Example Calculation:
For a $75,000 annual salary working 40 hours/week for 52 weeks:
- Total hours per year: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours
- Hourly rate: $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06/hour
Important Considerations:
- Unpaid time off: If you have unpaid vacation, reduce weeks per year accordingly (e.g., 50 weeks for 2 weeks unpaid)
- Overtime: This calculation assumes regular hours only. Overtime is typically paid at 1.5x rate
- Benefits: Salaried positions often include benefits that add to total compensation
